THE NOBLE 24TH
Biographical Records of the 24th Regiment in the Zulu War and the South African Campaigns 1877-1879
BY: Norman Holme

This new, definitive compilation contains biographical, service & casualty details, and medal entitlements of the 2500 Officers and Men of the 1st and 2nd Battalions 24th Regiment of Foot who fought in the South Africa campaigns 1877-79, which included the massacre at Isandhlwana and the epic defence of the mission station at Rorke’s Drift. The complete alphabetical listing of each Battalion is cross-referenced to the Isandhlwana Casualty Roll and the Roll of Rorke's Drift Defenders. Many entries contain comprehensive biographical information, some of it never previously published. Even the briefer entries provide no less fascinating insights into the lives of those who campaigned with the Regiment - for example, only a month after his part in the action at Rorke’s Drift, 25B/1386 Private Michael Kiley was court-martialled and sentenced to 50 lashes on a charge of insubordination. Eye-witness accounts from some of the few who survived the slaughter at Isandhlwana and from others who were defenders at Rorke's Drift are found also in this volume. Sadly the author, Norman Holme, died shortly after completing the manuscript, which is the culmination of his lifetime's research into the 24th Regiment, its Officers and Men during the South African and Zulu campaigns
